Also known as Male androgenetic alopecia, describes hair loss from the scalp which is patterned and progressive.

It affects up to 80% of men during the course of their life, onset can start between 20 – 25, with a frequency that increases with age.

Usually starting to the front and sides of the scalp, progressing towards the back of the head.

Androgens and genetics play a role in this.

Hair growth naturally occurs in cycles of various phases. Male Pattern Baldness occurs, as with every successive cycle of hair growth, the susceptible hair follicles become smaller, creating shorter finer hairs to replace thicker pigmented hairs, the period between shedding the hairs and regrowth also becomes longer, which leads to a reduced number of hairs on the scalp.

It typically presents itself as a widespread reduction in density of hair over the crown and frontal scalp, and widening of the central parting. 

It is thought that Oestrogen levels are involved in Female Pattern Hair Loss.
It affects up to 50% of women during the course of their life. Onset can be at any age following puberty.

In women the onset is usually before age 40, over 10% of premenopausal women have some evidence of female pattern hair loss and may affect up to 56% of women over the age of 70.

Women may also experience hair loss after pregnancy or ‘post partum’.  During pregnancy hair growth usually increases. However, after giving birth , it’s common for women to lose more hair than usual for approximately 3 – 4 months.  This is partly due to the extra hair growth during pregnancy.

Post-partum hairloss reportedly affects approximately 40% of women in the first 3 - 4 months after giving birth, however this figure is maybe conservative.

It occurs due to the fluctuation of hormones after pregnancy, these changes impact the hair growth cycle phases.

Most people understand that Alopecia is a form of hair loss.  However what they don’t often know is that there are several types of the condition.

Is thought to be an autoimmune condition, which often starts with isolated round or oval patches of hair loss, on the scalp or across the body including beard, eyebrows, eyelashes or body hair.

Alopecia Areata is when cells from the immune system gather around hair follicles and attack the follicle and stop it from producing hairs.
This can sometimes develop into Alopecia Totalis which is hair loss across the entire scalp or Alopecia Universalis – hair loss across the whole body.

Alopecia can also be induced by medication such as Chemotherapy drugs, this type of Alopecia is usually temporary, during treatment.
